  • The site on which The Fullerton now stands was previously occupied by Fort Fullerton. Named after Sir Robert Fullerton, the first governor of the Straits Settlements, it was built in 1829, to defend the town at the mouth of the Singapore River.
  • The Fullerton Building, built in 1928, was the largest building ever built in Singapore then, costing over 4 million dollars.
  • Perched atop the Fullerton Building sits the original landmark Lighthouse, which was used in the old days to guide all ships approaching the harbour.
  • The Fullerton Building was the centre of Singapore's commercial, social and official life. It became home to three of the most important institutions of Singapore: the General Post Office, The Singapore Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
  • Since the 1950s, Fullerton Square on which the hotel now sits, was the site of many election campaign rallies.
  • In the early days, the Fullerton Building was occupied by the General Post Office, which used the basement and two floors as sorting rooms, postal halls and offices. It utilised the waterfront along Collyer Quay to transport the mail onto waiting ships.
  • The Fullerton Building was designed by the Shanghai-based architectural firm of Keys & Dowdeswell and is an example of a neo-classical colonial government building, distinguished by tall Doric columns.
